Latest News Working Parties
Barley Straw operation on Cargill Lake

The barley straw operation on Cargill went well with fourteen members attending. This year the barley straw was put in Christmas tree netting to give a better area for the straw to work to its full advantage and effect. Thanks go to all members attending especially John who brings up the straw from Cambridge and operates the boat, to Lee who you see clambering on the stumps ensuring the floats are well secure. Everyone worked well and hopefully the straw will help keep the blue/green algae at bay. It is hoped we will carry out a further barley straw application later on in the Autumn. Pictures can be seen in the Cargill gallery.

Watts Pool

The disabled platforms have now been completed with overhanging branches removed. Disabled members are reminded that they must have another person with them whilst fishing for safety reasons. Pictures of the platforms can be seen on the gallery. Members are also reminded that Watts Pool observes the close season, 15th March to 16th June.

The Societies permit year starts at the beginning of June each year.

Cargill Lake closed because of low oxygen reading

In the last couple of weeks Cargill Lake was closed to fishing because of a low oxygen reading. The Environment Agency were involved and took water samples, and the Blenheim installed a water pump to create a flow and increase the oxygen quality, which we are pleased to say has improved the situation. We still await the Environment Agencies results of the water samples.

River cleaned up: Hythe End up to the railway bridge.

The river has been cleaned up in the last couple of months from Hythe End up to the railway bridge. The work took some two or three weeks and the river now needs a good flush of water to clear any debris that has been left, before fishing can get back to normal.

No improvement to the fishing at Harefield

After a day’s fishing by 10 members at Harefield it seems that after all the time and money spent, there has been no improvement to the fishing. Further habitat improvements are being pursued by the Environment Agency but all of these things take time. British Waterways are also looking into trying to improve the situation.

The Last Working Party

Only four members attended with a number of our regular members being struck down with a bad cold virus.

Two more swims on the river were cleared of fallen trees and overhang, making them much more accessible for the members to fish.
